Zack Davis and Mauro Soggiu connected in 2008 while Zack was an Artist in Residence at the prestigious Museum of Arts and Design in New York City. The majority of the work in this exhibition was produced during this year, where both artists were immersed as “foreigners” (Zack is from California and Mauro is from Italy) in the highly stimulating environment of NYC. Their collective observations of the hectic, dog eat dog world of New York, brimming over with consumerism and the aggressive impetus to strive, are interpreted in the work they created.
Zack is a conceptual artist and ceramic clay is commonly his muse. As an artist in residence, he took the notion of “going to work” quite literally; he donned a suit on his way to the “office”, hunkered down at his wheel and threw pot after pot. The vessels were often densely squished into a briefcase, functioning as the evidence of a hard day at work. On view will be a series of such cases – the archeological residue of a busy man in the big city with his nose to the grindstone. Zack is the recipient of the 2009 Emerging Artist Fellowship at Socrates Sculpture Park, Long Island City, NY.
Mauro Soggiu is an Italian artist with an exuberant painterly style. His works favor a lively color palette and are primarily abstract, yet are often punctuated with iconic imagery. In this current exhibition, Mauro incorporates the advertisement sodden experience of living in New York into his paintings. Being a native Italian, he hones in on the products of his native country: Italian liquors, brands of pasta, etc., and layers these familiar symbols onto his canvas. In this act he is both embracing his heritage and poking fun of American pop culture’s tendency to reduce outsiders into two dimensional stereotypes. Mauro has exhibited extensively throughout galleries and museums in Italy and we are honored to have him visit us here in San Francisco.
