Originally from Bogota, Colombia, Omar Chacon received his MFA from the San Francisco art institute with a major in painting. In this most recent body of work, he continues to be inspired by the intricate patterns and weavings exemplified by folk art of indigenous peoples. Omar’s ongoing fascination with world culture is internalized and then reconfigured through his uniquely contemporary eye. In this synergistic process, he finds a place for the personal and the universal to interact. His work is also distinguished by a masterful control of his chosen medium, vividly colored acrylic paint, and by it’s sculptural application onto the canvas. The resulting paintings are impressively inventive with the use of paint and orgiastic in beauty.
Matt Gonzalez is best known as a local green party activist, having served terms as the president of the San Francisco board of supervisors and by nearly acheiving victory in the last mayoral election. As a long time supporter of the local art community, he hosted numerous art events while in office at city hall, and has written and published essays about beat era artists such as Jack Hirschman and Jack Micheline. He has recently been outed as an accomplished artist himself, and we are thrilled to be exhibiting his collage work which he crafts from material he finds while walking in the city.
