Lincart is thrilled to present our second solo exhibition of Bay Area artist Tucker Nichols. In his recent work, Tucker’s fascination with the details of modern life meets head on with his extensive academic study of Chinese painting. He is, in effect, a contemporary calligrapher, crafting lines and text with an acute mindfulness. Even his abstract landscapes, while elemental in composition, reveal his keen observation and subversive wit. By stripping down the content of his work as far as possible—to a fragment of text or a simple cloud form—he reveals something both enigmatic and oddly familiar. Like a visual zen koan, the drawings often linger in the mind and enlighten the viewer to particular truths. The show will feature panels and works on paper in the main gallery.

Continuing his practice of site-specific installations, Tucker will also create a wall drawing in the window and front gallery at Lincart. Resembling brainstorming sessions gone awry, these projects reflect his experience onsite as he tackles a vast, unresolved topic. Previous subjects have included the response to last year’s tsunami, the demise of the Internet boom, and the current state of the California dream. This time, responding to the demolition of the gallery’s adjacent buildings to make room for condominiums, he will be taking on the wide-ranging topic of housing in America. Fueled by observations, casual interviews and his own broad ruminations, the installation is sure to raise questions about the eating habits of construction workers as well as how we live in the world.

In addition to his show at Lincart, Tucker has recently had solo shows at ZieherSmith Gallery in NYC, the Kunstpanorama in Luzern and Mission 17 in San Francisco. His work has been featured in group shows internationally, including John Connelly Presents and the Drawing Center in New York. His drawings have been published in McSweeney’s, The Believer, Zyzzyva and the New York Times.
