The Artist’s Touch, the Sleight of Hand: The artist’s hand, while often hidden in contemporary art, has made a dramatic comeback in the last couple of years. This exhibition will survey six artists who emphasize hands-on art making in their work. Several of the artists focus on craft and production while others exploit a signature touch in their work. Perhaps in reaction to an overwhelming sense of mass production in modern life,  many artists have tried to instill their art with originality and also with human delight. In some cases, the artwork elicits a sense of awe and conjures up associations of the artist as alchemist or magician. This show celebrates the artist’s ability to transform everyday materials into something extraordinary.

Artists included in the exhibition:

  • Sarah Cain paints and collages works that incorporate the passage of time and the process of art making.
  • Veronica DeJesus makes intricate drawings that explore complex personal experiences.
  • Ruth Laskey makes woven, linen drawings. With her subtle designs and delicate weaves, the artist creates works for quiet contemplation.
  • Tucker Nichols is interested in language and modes of communication. His text installations document everyday speech, which frequently becomes poetry.
  • Analia Saban works out conceptual ideas about art making with her reconstructions of paintings and photographs.
  • Jamie Vasta uses glitter to abstract and energize her American landscape scenes.
  • Claude Zervas constructs light sculptures and digital photographs that relate to the Northwest landscape.

See you there!!.
